Dated by the artist in the stone: 1839

Masterfully executed lithograph with one of the artist's typical playfully frisky bordures with winged putti and music-playing fauns.

Print had been folded in had (vertically). Paper is age-toned and a bit soiled along margin edges. Reverse side has a piece of paper glued to the bottom center.

"Gymkhna" (the word is a composition of English: Gym and Hindi and other Indian languages - khan. The event is one of a social and sporting club which the British assumed in India. Here gymkhana is an equestrian fun game combining horsemanship, skill and speed. This event took place on the island of Malta.

Print is in very god condition. Reverse side has unrelated text and picture prints.

Card Players

Notice that the left player is holding some cards behind his back. The person in the background looks over the shoulder of the right player and gives the left player a signal.

Steel engraving by A.H. Payne after Caravaggio ca 1850. The print was done after the painting the "Falschspieler" that was later accredited to Valentine de Boulogne (1594-1632). It is in the Galerie of Alte Meister in Dresden.

"Das Schachspiel"(the chess game)

Anonyme Original-Lithographie. Um 1850

Der Spieler von Weiss wird gleich am Beginn des Spiels von seinem Gegner mit triumphierender Miene und unter dem Gelächter der Zuschauenden in eine schwierige Situation gebracht, die auf ein Schach Matt zu deuten scheint. Aber der junge Mann im Vordergrund scheint noch nicht aufzugeben. Wer weiss, ob er nicht doch und gegen die Erwartung seines Gegners und aller Zuschauer einen Ausweg findet?

Leider lässt sich zu diesem hübschen Blatt nichts Genaues sagen, da weder ein Künstler noch ein Verleger, noch ein genaues Druckdatum bezeichnet wird. Stil und Papier deuten jedoch einwandfrei auf die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts hin.

Guter Erhaltungszustand. Nur minimale Altersspuren.

Print, clean except for a very light general age toning (patina), shows some light creasing in margins. Upper plate mark line has been supported from behind by a strip of very this China paper. Wide margins. Condition, considering age, is very good.

Here gymkhana is an equestrian fun game combining horsemanship and skill. The drawing of the pig was sliding up and down a wire, and the rider had to hit the moving pig drawing with his lance, while galloping for speed in the concourse. The event took place on the island of Malta.
