Herculaneum Ercolano

These prints show frescoes and archeologicl treasures found in the ruins of Herculaneum. Herculaneum was totally buried in superheated pyroclastic ash and lava during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD. The town was forgotten until 1710 when the first remains were found. In 1738 Carl von Bourbon, the king of Naples, started a systematic excavation of the area which has continued until the present day. Much of the area cannot be excavated because it lies under the modern town of Ercolano.

Some of the genitals of the original statues have been discreetly covered
by a few lines by the engravers who contributed to this work,

Prints are in good condition unless otherwise mentioned.

Haples (Napoli, Neapel), 1757-1792 (in eight volumes)

Imprisoned by King Minos, Ikarus and his father Daedalus knew only one escape way: by flying. They manufactured wings for themselves held together by wax. Daedalos emphasized to his son, not to get too close to the sun, lest the wax would melt. But Ikarus, exuberant as he was, disregarded his father's admonishment. The heat of the sun melted the wax of his wings. He crashed and died.This scene shows Daedalos landing next to dead Ikarus.

The Antiquities
of
Herculaneum
Translated from the Italian
by Thomas Martyn and John Lettice
Bachelors of Divinity, and Fellows of Sidney College, Cambridge

London, 1773.

For anyone who enjoys decorating a home or an office with antique prints this is an opportunity to acquire some of the fine examples of early Roman samples of wall frescoes as they were found in Herculaneum. We are allowed to take a glimpse at the high standard of their life-style, which, in turn, may give us an idea of how make use of the classic values for ourselves to our own joy and to the enlightment of our guests.

Page size: ca. 30.5 x 22.5 cm ( 12 x 8.9 ")

Image size given below. All prints are in Very Good Condition with light toning unless otherwise mentioned.

Pl. 1: Out of the four Monochromi upon marble, most perfect in their kind, and inenstimable for their singularity. The ladies here represented: Latona, Niobe, Phoebe, Ileaira and Aglaia. Here we have the rare possibilty to even tell the artist, Alexander of Athens, and thus can date the painting at least roughly from the form of the Greek characters to some time before the Christian Era

Image has light foxing and one small thin spot (the size of an "o").

23.4 x 21.9 cm ( 9.2 x 8.6 ")

$ 180.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4351

Pl.II. Youth assaulting a centaur as it lays violent hands on a terrified nymph, possibly referring to the war between the Lapithae with the Centaurs. Then the young lady would be Hippodamia the wife of Pirithous on whom a rape was attempted by Eurytus, the centaur who was punished with death

15.7 x 20.6 cm ( 6.2 x 8.1 ")

$ 220.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4352

Pl. III. This picture has sustained much detriment from the passing time that its outlines are scarcely visible. The old man is holding a boy or a girl between his knees. The nymph bending over the pair and the stately lady holding the bridle of her horse are also related in one way or another to the child. We may conclude various possibilities of depiction: The education of Achilles, the concealment of Neptune or the clandistine parturition of Ceres.

One tiny spot as big as an "o" in the image.

16 x 20.4 cm ( 6.3 x 8 ")

$ 150.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4353

Pl. IV. Figures with masks expressing greef and lamentation.

One thin spot the size of "o" in the image.

15.7 x 20.7 cm ( 6.2 x 8.1 ")

$ 125.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4354

Pl. V. This plate shows the famous achievement of Theseus
in Crete. The Athenian youths and virgins appear to be
coming out of the entrance to the labyrinth. The Minotaur
lies at the feet of the conqueror. The goddess who sits above
and holds in her hand bow and arrow may be assumed to be
Theseus' protectress.

24 x 17.1 cm ( 9.4 x 6.7 ")

$ 260.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4355

Pl. VI. This picture is the companion of the preceding. The child
who is suckled by the hind may be Telephus. The other figures in
this picture seem to bear a relation to him. His father Hercules,
adorned with his most remarkable attributes (bow and arrow, club
and lion's skin) attentively surveys him while a youg nymph,
distinguished by wings, some ears of corn and a crown of olive,
points at him with her finger. A majestic lady adorned crowned
with flowers, a basket of fruit at her side and a rustic staff in her
left hand uggests to be the protective deity of the exposed infant.
The young Faunus or Pan may be meant to particularize her. The
eagle and the tame lion were probably meant to render the design
more clear make it in fact more obscure.

23.1 x 16.8 cm ( 9.1 x 6.6 ")

$ 260.00

Order Nr. ERCOANO4356

Pl. VII. This picture represents the first labor of the very
young Hercules: strangling the two serpents sent by Juno to
kill himAlcmena appears in an attitude of clearly expressed
terror. Jupiter is shown seated on his throne with a scourge
and a scepter. On the other side Amphitryon hold in his arms
the terrified Iphiclus.

24.6 x 18.7 cm ( 9.7 x 7.4 ")

$ 220.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4357

Pl. IX. Here we see the satyr Marsyas sitting
upon a rock with the young Olympus learning
to play the flute.

22 x 16.1 cm ( 8.7 x 6.3 ")

$ 220.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4358

Pl. XI. Much guessing on the meaning of this picture has been made by scholars. The most likely among the many and differring
conjectures: The discovery of Orestes as described by Euripides in his tragedy "Iphigenia in Tauris". In the youth on the far right
sitting in a pensive and melancholic posture we recognize Orestes, the lady embracing him being his sister Iphigenia. The youth
opposite the two would then represent Pylades who discovers to Iphigenia her brother to whom he was to deliver her letter. In the
background we see a deity who seems to be placed in a niche of a temple who is most likely to be Diana.

23.9 x 19.4 cm ( 9.4 x 7.6 ")

$ 250.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4359

Pl. XV. A young Faun is kissing a Bacchant

24.5 x 20 cm ( 9.6 x 7.9 ")

$ 280.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4364

Pl. XVI. The subject of this piece of art is a
naked and bearded Faun attempting to kiss a
nymph who tries to escape him.

24.5 x 20 cm ( 9.6 x 7.9 ")

$ 280.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4365

Pl. XLVIII. The oak tree we see in this picture is flanked
by two palms. Above all, in a shield?, we see a Medusa's
head. The nymph under the oak tree has a bill in her hand.
The landscape underneith shows an Egyptian temple on
the Nile, clearly recognizable from the crocodiles.

23.5 x 15.5 cm ( 9.3 x 6.1)

$ 120.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4360SOLD

Pl. XLIX. This plate is clearly a companion of the former
plate. Also showing a Medusa head in a shield, an oak tree
and two palms. The scene is, again, happening on the Nile
as indicated by the crocodile.

23.5 x 15.5 cm ( 9.3 x 6.1)

$ 120.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4361

Pl. XLVI. Four heavily loaded vessils approaching a rich coast. plus three ornamental compartments.

15.7 x 23.7 cm ( 6.2 x 9.3 ")

$ 170.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4363

Pl. L. This picture is diveded into three compartments, all of them relating to Egyptian subjects. We discover a crocodile and a hippopotamus on the Nile. The other two seem to show the chief Egyptian deities: Isis and Osiris together with some of their symbols.

15.7 x 23.7 cm ( 6.2 x 9.3 ")

$ 150.00

Order Nr. ERCOLANO4362
