Probably the most detailed, largest and decorative map of the island of Madagascar formerly named San Lorenzo by the discoverers, the Portugese. Shows also in detail the Comorra Islands Group and, very nice an detailed the Ile de Bourbon, better known as Ile de ăReunion". Also showing the nearest coast line of Mozambique.

Condition: Excellent! Horizontal centerfold.

Attractive hand coloring.

In the upper left is the Isles of Bourbon (now Réunion), famous for its vanila. In the center is the Isle de France and on the right is Isle Rodrigue (Rodriquez). At the bottom are the three islands shown in position east of Madagascar.

Map has vertical fold with some light creases. Tiny repaired ter on lower margin edge.

Detailed map of Madagascar, S. Apollonia, (Ile de Bourbon, nowadays ăReunion"), because it was discovered by the Portugese Mascarenhas on the patrron day of Apollonia. Also shows island group of Comorra and the coast line of Mazambique.

Heavy general age toning. Two creases lower left and repair in upper left corner

Map shows in great detail (of the time) Africa from the equator to the Cape of Good Hope. It also shows in detail the Island of Madagascar and the various island groups in the Indian Ocean, including Reunion and Maurice.

Except for the right side, which obviously was in poor shape and has restored tears and creases as well as an added margin, and a vertical crease running down the middle of the image, except for all of that the actual image has a strong, clear impression and is interesting on account of the shown detail with borderlines of long gone kingdoms and the information about various tribes and their areas. Just to name a few: Kingdxom of Mataman, Kingdom of Quiteve, Kingdom of Sabia, Kingdom of Mongale, Kingdom of Nimeamaie or Mono-Emugi, Kingdom of Matamba, Kingdom of Angola, Kingdom of Abutua, Kingdom of Benguela, Kingdom of Macoco or Anzico And tribes: Caffers, Jagas Anthropopha, Zanguebar, Namaguas, Hottentots, Maracates, Bokkemeale and several others. This map gives ample information about ethnic kinships Southern Africa, south of the equator.

One of the first maps of all of Africa with great detail for such an early age. In the lower left isthe northeast coast of Brazil.

General age toning. Margins have some traces of age and use. Some small areals of thin paper along centerfold (only seen when held agains light) In general very nice condition of this very beautiful map of Africa.

"Descrittione Dell'Isola Di San Lorenzo".Copper etching from "L'Isole piu Famose del Mondo" (The most famous islands of the world by Thomas Porcacchi (1530 - 1585) and engraved by Girolamo Porro. The first edition of this work was published in Venice in 1572. This is from the second edition, 1620.

The map at the bottom is an enlargement from the page shown above.This somewhat northeast-oriented map of the Malagasy Republic (Madagascar) shows lots of topographical detail, including many small islands. Notice the two sea monsters. A second page of text (Italian) is included with history and geography of the island.

The map image is clean. The map page has water stains in the two left corners not affecting text. The same spots are on the text page in the two right corners. Both pages have a repaired worm track in margin. Light toning and minimal spotting in text. Condition is Almost Very Good.
